Technology MacGyver

Mission

To build useful solutions with awesome people - and have fun doing it.

I am looking for an engineering management position that will allow me to combine my years of hands-on experience designing and building systems with my passion to help talented engineers become even better.

Skills

Architect

I have a solid track record of helping users assemble workable requirements and managing the implementation process through to delivery. Whether building systems on government contract work for US military clients, internal department clients as a developer for an international retailer, or helping early-stage companies iterate their MVPs towards scaleable 2.0s, I have repeatedly demonstrated an ability to balance time, resources and requirements to produce solutions that work.

Developer

I believe that while elegance is one of the key hallmarks of truly awesome software, the perfect is all too often the enemy of the good. Software is never "done", so understanding how to get it "done enough" is a crucial concept. Python has been my go-to language for a long time, but I've worked with many languages over the years and am always on the lookout for an excuse to dive into a new one. Meeting the functional spec isn't enough - readbility and maintainability are first-class deliverables as well.

Experience

2017-present

Senior Developer

Do-everything software architect and developer on small team at a disruptive cybersecurity company. Initially worked on enhancements to and scaling up of custom-designed MVP system-of-systems designed to multiply analysis speed and effectiveness. Recent efforts focused on building more specialized (and almost entirely serverless) systems to automate key workflows, including flexible automation to integrate data from third-party services.

True greenfield full-stack work, ranging from bug fixing, to new feature development, to cloud architecture design & management. Python, Postgres, Elasticsearch, and a huge array of AWS offerings (EC2, S3, VPC, RDS, Lambda, API Gateway, Route53, Cloudfront, Step Functions, Cloudformation, Cloudwatch, DynamoDB, SQS, SNS, IAM). Full-time remote position; direct report to co-founder.

Managed several review and response efforts for in-process patents. Reported directly to CEO and Board of Directors.

HireIQ

2012-2016

Software Developer

Devops on very small engineering team for virtual interviewing startup. Python, Django, AWS, Apache, MySQL, MongoDB, the ML library scikit-learn and Twilio are just some of the tools used to build products to help companies find better job candidates faster. Notable accomplishments include: converted our self-managed legacy phone switch architecture to Twilio; migrated our entire self-hosted product stack (Xen server VMs) to a custom AWS OpsWorks stack.
